The Master of Ceremonies for the 2019 TIN Report Launch and Awards is David Downs.
In his ‘day job’, David is a General Manager at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), working with the Technology sector to help fast growing tech companies grow internationally, and leading a cross-government project for the Agritech sector. David has held various roles at NZTE, in the Services, Customer and Corporate Services teams.
David spent 13 years at Microsoft, in New Zealand and as regional director for South East Asia, and he has set up and run successful businesses of his own. David is a published author on New Zealand Innovation, with two highly successful books – No.8 Re-wired, and No.8 Recharged.
He’s an ex-comedian, TV and Radio actor, and a genetically modified organism who documented his battle with cancer in the book A Mild Touch of the Cancer. David regularly presents and gives talks on his cancer journey and on the power of positive thinking and optimism.
CEO & Founder
Rebecca is CEO and Founder of Fusion5. She co-founded the business in 2002 and has grown the business to what it is now, employing close to 450 people in nine locations across NZ and Australia and heading for $100m turnover in 2020.
Rebecca started her career with IBM during the IT boom of the 1980s, staying there for nine years working in positions in sales, product management and channel management before moving to Big 5 firms in the 1990s setting up ERP businesses.
In her spare time, Rebecca is focused on being fit, she’s a keen swimmer and provides sponsorship and support to emerging athletes.

Surgical Design Studio
Greg is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the ADHB and Associate Professor at UoA. He holds a PhD in biomedical engineering and has a passion for developing devices to aid care and rehabilitation of patients.
Greg founded Surgical Design Studio in 2018. Surgical Design Studio is an award-winning healthcare company, using cutting-edge technology to develop lifesaving and life-changing medical devices for people with chronic and acute intestinal conditions including IBD and Colorectal cancer.
Founder & Producer
Maru founded Metia Interactive in 2003. Metia Interactive designs and develops original titles and third party games across multiple platforms including PlayStation, Apple iOS, PC, Mac and other technologies such as augmented reality.
As a games designer and producer Maru’s focus is on indigenous storytelling, she has published several Maori games, Sparx, to teach rangatahi how to manage depression, Maori Pa Wars, a strategic tower defence game, Takaro to teach rangatahi about coding concepts and Guardian Maia, interactive fiction that follows the journey of a Maori woman through a dystopian Aotearoa.
Maru’s accolades include: Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to gaming and mental health (2016); the MCV Pacific Women in Games Award for Innovator of the year (2017); Māori Entrepreneurial Leader Award from the University of Auckland Business Leaders Awards (2018); Forbes Top 50 Women in Technology (2018) and the Te Maunga Kai Kapua (Tuakana), Industry Pillar Pav award (2019).
