Kia ora koutou,

Just one week until the release of the 2024 NZ Healthtech Report! Created in partnership with Medtech-iQ Aotearoa, this report is rich in data and insight: 40 pages long and featuring 233+ companies.

Our launch event on Wednesday 14 August is utterly SOLD OUT – we look forward to seeing registered guests at the University of Auckland. They will be treated to a star panel: Jeff Douglas from Douglas Pharmaceuticals, Natalia Lopez from Kitea Health, Kathryn de Ridder from Bridgewest Ventures, Ehsan Vaghefi from Toku Eyes, and Aisling Weir from Buddle Findlay.

For those who missed out, we are happy to provide a sneak peek below, with analysis from our Head of Research, Alex Dickson.

“For obvious reasons, healthtech began to exert a strong gravitational pull on investors from 2020. The following year, global VC deployed to healthtech soared between 50% and 60% to somewhere in the region of US$120B.”

“New Zealand reached peak healthtech investment of $92m in 2021. Mature start-ups collected $72m across 11 later-stage deals, with an additional 16 early-stage deals inked at an average $1.2m per raise.”

“Enthusiasm cooled in 2022. Cautious investors began to prioritise sustainable growth and profitability over sheer growth potential. Locally, transaction value fell. Early-stage deal volume remained steady, albeit with a lower average of $770,000 per raise.”

“Investors continued to back the sector in 2023, but with a focus on earlier stages, lower valuations, and smaller deal sizes. Of the 30 deals accounted for, 23 were secured by seed and growth stage start-ups for $35m, over half of all capital raised.”

For these insights and more, please download the report when it launches online on Thursday 14 August.
